Match result from John Wrench and Jim Friar. Match report from Jim. The match started with a win on board 4 for Andrew Moore. Dave played a King's Gambit. Fighting defence from Andy marched his king-side pawns supported by pieces left Dave way behind on development. Dave soon crumbled under the pressure. Next to finish was James Friar against John Chester. Although John won a piece, he could not stop a perpetual check. Similarly, Maurice Bissell agreed a draw with Joseph Friar in a finely balanced game. Mark Riley blockaded Mike Friar's passed pawn, so with bishops on opposite-coloured squares, a draw was agreed. On top board, John Wrench defended a wave of attacks and simplified to a drawn ending. On board 6, Jason Pereira agreed a draw in a queen and pawn ending. Although a pawn down, Jason's passed pawn secured the draw.

Match reported by Ray Collett. Although Worcester were favourites, the first win was scored by Kidderminster on board 1. A truce had already been declared on board 2. The score was soon levelled for Worcester by captain Andrew Farthing who developed an irresistible mating attack. Near the end of the session Jim Keene also broke through to win and Worcester's new player David L Roberts agreed a draw on board 6. On board 5, Ray Collett tried to squeeze a win out of a dead level bishop -and-pawn ending. After bishops were exchanged, the Worcester player had what the computers think is a won ending, but a draw was a fair result.

Match reported by John Wrench. Board 1 was a Vienna Opening and the players agreed an early draw in a level position. There were further draws on boards 4 and 5. Malvern took the lead after Matthew Jordon won a piece for a pawn and eventually reached a winning endgame. John Knee was two pawns up on board 3 and with increasing pressure and an entrenched advanced knight Riley resigned. Board 2 wa last to finish. It looked ceratin that Clarke would lose on time havinvg only 1 minutes for 15 moves at the first time control. Ian not only made the moves, nut emerged a pawn up from his scramble. Although Clarke sealed his last move for the adjounment both players were poised to get passed pawns in a rook and pawn ending. Bissell offered the draw, which was accepted.

Match reported by Jim Friar. Hagley extended their winning streak by beating Malvern in a home match. Board 1 agreed to share the point in a equal middle game tussle. Next to finish was Mike Friar who won a piece 'out of the blue' in what looked like a drawn middle game. Joseph Friar had been recently been preparing the line his opponent played, and his opponent5 blundered a piece the recapture of which would have led to a back rank mate. Near the cend of the session three boards were still playing! The board 2 game was so sharp spectators could only guess what was happening. In the late stage of this game, Andrew Moore won a piece and then cooly defended Ian Clarke's attack before winning Ian's queen. On board 6, Julian taylor achieved equality in the opening, but In a complicated middle game his rook got stranded and Matthew Jordan won the exchange. As the time control approached, Matthew pushed home his advantage foiling an attaempt to give perpetual check. In the last game to finish, James Friar won a rook and pawn ending first creating a passed pawn and then shepherded it to promotion with an active king.

Match reported by Jim Friar. A rollercoaster of a match! Moore's train was delayed and did not start his game till 8 o clock. Board 4 was first to finish where players called peace when neither side could do anything constructive in a queen and bishop ending. On board 6, Taylor equalised with an exchange Ruy Lopez, but then things started to go wrong for Hagley. Curry got a central passed pawn and Taylor could not stop it without losing material. On board 2, Edge trapped Moore's king in the centre and won a piece. Two points down, Hagley fought back. Mike Friar won a pawn in the opening, defended it doggedly, and capitalised in the ending. On board 1 Jim Friar gave up a pawn for active pieces. In the time scramble, Fisburne lost queen for a rook leaving the one adjourned game to decide the match. In the adjourned game Hagley are better with an extra pawn, but it's a trick knight ending. The adjourned game was played out on 14 December with a win for James Friar and Hagley win the match.

Match reported by Jim Friar. With two regular players missing, Hagley did well to hold Worcester. Hagley's original selection for board 6 failed to show and after 45 minutes Worcester sportingly allowed a substitution. Having lost a lot of time Julian tried to make it up in an advanced French but slipped up. Board 5 shared the point as the position reduced to a bishop and six pawns each. Board 5 went into a rook and pawn ending, but an extra pawn didn't help and a draw was agreed. On board 1, Kitson played his favourite Kings Gambit. He won two pieces for a rook but slipped up when he thought he had a mate. The game was agreed drawn. On board 2, Keene had to make 12 moves in a minute to reach the time control in a tricky position. A draw was agreed in an equal rook and pawn ending when Keene had made the moves. Finally, Joseph Friar adjourned with Harris also in a rook and pawn ending , but Joseph Friar resigned without resuming play.

Board 1 was a quick draw. The reamining board played on until nearly the time control but in both cases the positions were equal and draws were agreed.

Match reported by John Wrench. Hagley deployed their strongest team in this local Derby. First to finish was Board 1 where a draw was agreed in an exchange Ruy Lopez. A draw soon followed on board 4. Andrew Moore had sacrificed a bishop for open files and a king side attack. David Close wisely declined the sacrifice and instead captured a pawn . On board 6, Alan Preece, playing with the black pieces, secured a creditable draw against his young opponent. Mark Riley had early pressure on board 3 against Mike Friar. Mark Riley built up an attack on Mike Friar's king, stuck in the centre,. but the knight sacrifice that followed may have been unsound. Mike Fraiar defended well hanging on to the extra piece to secure the win. Maurice Bissell looked to be under constant pressure on Board 2 after a check in the opening that forced a king move. Jim Friar piled on the pressure and it was difficult to see how Maurice could complete his development with pieces still on the starting squares well into the middle game. Somehow Maurice managed to equalise and a draw was agreed. On board 5 an in-form Tim Yates beat Joseph Friar to salvaged a match point for Kidderminster.

Match result from Andrew Farthing. Report from Ray Collett. After an hour-and-a-half's play the positions on all boards were finely balanced and there was all to play for. On board 1 Peter Kitson was a pawn down and the players soon reduced material to a bishop vs knight and pawn ending with Brian Turner grinding out the win. Board 3 agreed what appeared to me a grandmaster draw. Steve Mellor won efficiently. On board 4, Jim Keene sacrificed a piece and unleashed a fierce attack on Geoffrey Herbert's king, which was mated in the centre. Matthew Jordan and Ray Collett chickened out of an interesting position when players were approaching the time control to agree a draw. The last game to finish was on board 6. David L Roberts, Worcester's new player, was a pawn down in a bishop and pawn ending initially, but Tony Shaw's pawns were doubled and not defensible. After some hairy manoeuvres and exchanges David promoted first to win the game and the match for the home team.

Match reported by Andrew Farthing. The match hung in the balance. At the adjournment, John Wrench appeared to have the upper hand with pawns threatening to break through on the queen side, but Mellor resigned after considering the position overnight. Although Worcester won quickly on board 6, and had obtained a good position on board on board 5, when the time control was looming, Worcester players stood worse on both boards 4 and 5.

Match reported by John Edge. On board 1, Turner blundered a pawn but Fishburne had to return it.. On board 2, Edge had pressure, but gained activity and a draw was agreed with both players in severe time trouble.A rapid exchange of pieces on board 3 led to a drawn ending. On board 4 at adjournment Grimes has the initiative with much material left. The game is to be played out on 15 March. Board 5 was also adjourned. When play resumed Jordan forced the win equalling the team's scores. After an early queen exchange on board 6, a forceful passed pawn led to the win of the exchange and victory for Asbury. Canham-Grimes game was adjourned and eventually resulted in a draw making the match drawn

Match reported by Jim Friar. Worcester won the previous encounter in this league. The league championship depended on this match and both teams fielded their strongest  players. On board 1 Steve Mellor played a Benko Gambit against Craig Evans' d4. The position was complex to say the least, but the players downed tools when faced with a time scramble. On board 2, Peter Kitson played his favourite Kings Gambit against Jim Friar. Nick Harris played an aggressive Modern Defence against Mike Friar’s e4. David L Roberts played a double finachetto against James Friar in a positional game. Board 5 saw Jim Keene grappling Andrew Moore's Colle System and finally Joe Friar was again playing against Andrew’s favourite 1.Nc3. After an hour’s play, and with the exception of boards 4 and 5, it looked very favourable for Worcester, but Jim Keene missed a devastating discovered check in the early middle game. After a piece sacrifice in the opening on board 2, Jim Friar developed a fierce attack, which ended up as a queen and rook ending after which draw was agreed. On board 3, Mike Friar was 2 pawns down, but Nick Harris missed a check that picked up a rook. Two games were still playing at the adjournment, but David L Roberts resigned a hopeless minor piece ending the following day. In the remaining ajourned game Joe Friar is a pawn down in a rook and pawn ending with plenty of play to go, but Andrew Farthing is confident. The game was agreed drawn on 22 May.
