GM Arkell made short work his game on board 1 after Kitson went wrong in a Slav Defence. With the match result not in doubt, Hadley offered Collett a draw even though the Halesowen player had an advantage in a queen and minor piece ending.

After a quiet opening on board 1, Goodwin pressed for a win sacrificing the exchange in the endgame and players finished the session with bishop and four pawns against rook and two pawns. The result on board 1 was by adjudication. Davis after an unpromising start, exchanged down to an ending where his young opponent was out-played in the ending.Marchant was a pawn up in a rook and minor piece ending and the players completed the game in a second session. Clarke sacrificed the exchange for an attack, but did not make progress until a tactical error from his opponent. On board 5 Herbert won a piece for two pawns and won with an attack on the king, while and Knee had a straight forward win against his young opponent who nevertheless promises much for the future.

Match reported by Dustin Bowcott. The board 1 game was unfinished at the end of the session, but Adrian resigned overnight when silicon engines had shown the way. Macnaughton was the first to win with a shock mate. On board 4, Bowcott had early pressure in a Queen's Pawn Game, but chose a middlegame sacrifice and jettisoned a queen for rook and minor piece. Collett had to play carefully, but the lack of coherence in his opponent's forces soon allowed the queen to dominate and win the game.

Match reported by John Knee and John Edge. Arkell made short work on board 1. On board 2 there was a solid draw. Board 3 was been adjourned and Fishburne is the exchange up for a pawn, but numerous isolated pawns make the position difficult to evaluate and after a think the Mlavern player resigned without resuming play. Hunt found a neat combination to expose his opponent's king and win. Edge played a gambit and pressed for a win throughout winning material as time control approached. Hadley established a knight in the centre, but Jordan counter-attacked on the c-file and a draw was agreed.

Board 4 and 6 agreed draws after exchanging down and Edge broke through with a mating attack in a tense game. At the end of the session boards 2 and 5 agreed draws rather than adjourning.

Match reported by Ray Collett. Marchant was gifted a piece when his opponent fell into the Noah's Ark trap and finished first. Herbert's was the next Malvern victory and it looked all over for Worcester after only ninety minute's play with Yates a piece down, an unfavourable rook and pawn ending on board 1 and complicated positions on boards 2 and 4. Clarke had a rook and pawn for two minor pieces, but Hayles might have been able to exploit weakened squares in front of Clarke's king. That was not to be: Hayles suffered a 'fat finger' and touched the wrong piece to allow a mate in one. Osbourn with a smart combination saved Worcester from a whitewashing. Board 5 was the last to finish when Canham simplified to an ending where his opponent could not prevent pawn promotion.

After some inaccuracies by both board 1 players in time-trouble, the game was adjourned with Black having a two pawn advantage.White gambited a pawn on the king's wing in return for a strong pawn centre on board 2. Marchant restrained the pawns and made some progress on the king's wing. In time-trouble, a draw was agreed on three fold repetition. A draw was also agreed on Board 3 after a quiet opening. On board 4, White exerted some pressure in the middle game, owing to his strong d-pawn. On board 5 Reynolds with the two bishops, was able to hold Canham to a draw. Knee freed his centre position and after exchanges on the d-file a drawn endgame was reached.

Match reported by John Knee. Davis was unable to make significant progress and a draw was agreed in a double bishop ending. On board 2, white played a quiet opening and numerous exchanges led to a quick draw. In a double-edged position, Marchant had an initiative, but an oversight lost a queen for rook and the adjourned game was conceded 2 days later. In board 4 the centre became blocked, but Clarke opened the e-file and infiltrated his major pieces, winning material. Canham escaped a slightly cramped position and after exchanges the players adjourned. Canham had an extra pawn at adjournment and his opponent resigned without resuming. Knee lost a pawn, but found counterplay in the ensuing rook ending to halve the point. Board 5 result corrected 15 Mar.

Match reported by Ray Collett. Board 3 was adjourned with advantage to the Halesowen player who had to win to draw the match. In a blocked position both sides had all their major pieces. Hunt had control of the open h-file and had just checked the white king. After adjournment, silicon brains took a couple of microseconds to see that white had a forcing rook sac for a pawn on the second move of the main variation to bust open the white position. It would have been a really nice move to have seen played even if one was on the losing end of the combination and I am sure none of the spectators saw it. The game was resigned without further play.
