Match reported by Jim Friar and Giles Stanton. Rob Bricknell's gambit play gave Joseph a headache Joseph got into time trouble and was two pawns down when his flag fell. Irina, Redditch'e new player, achieved a well earned draw against Peter Keate. Jason Colelost the exchange and a pawn and was ground down by Kyle Reed. David Spowart lost quickly to Andrew Moore. On top board Nigel Towers and Jim Friar both held fast to earn a draw. Giles Stanton was still playing with the score at 3-2, but had given up the exchange to get a passed pawn, but with queen side weaknesses. Giles lost a critical tempo rather than pushing a passed pawn, which would have given strong winning chances, and Mike Friar won.

Match report by Ray Collett. A closely fought match. Boards 3 and 4 agreed early draws in balanced, but interesting positions. Board 5 was at an equal rook, minor piece and pawn ending when truce was declared. The first and only decisive result of the night was Peter Kitson's stout defence of the gambit pawn in a King's Gambit Accepted. Both players sent pawns forward to attack kings on opposite sides of the board in a queenless middlegame. Peter Kitson (Worcester) won a piece after an error.

Match report by Giles Stanton. The match started late with the away team having been delayed by heavy traffic. Geoff Herbert's game finished early, when his opponent accepted a piece sac and fall into an early mate. Next, the top board playersr agreed a peaceful ending. On board 5 Glies Stanton adopted a Kings Indian Attack to avoid Maurice Ginger's French Defence, gaining the exchange and a passed pawn. On bottom board Redditch's new player, Daniel Gander played with vigor gaining the upper hand with the black pieces and converting to win the game. On board 3, Ian Clarke took Jason Cole into an unfamiliar Sicilian Defence. Jason lost time on the clock and Ian's better coordinated pieces gained material and the game. Last to finish was board 4 where the Redditch player was a pawn down with a knight and four pawns v bishop and five pawns. John Knee created a passed a pawn, but David Spowart's knight won pawns. A draw was agreed as both players' pieces were stopping pawns from making progress

Match report by Stewart Fishburne. It was an exiting match with no dull game. One by one, though, games reached a draw or were agreed drawn in balanced positions where both players were short of time. The only decisive game was the last to finish. Both players had about 5 minutes for their last 20 moves. Everyone gathered round to watch. The position was highly unbalanced, Jorge Zavaleta having sacrificed a piece to expose Mike Friar's King. In the end time pressure told and Halesowen triumphed.

Match report from Ray Collett. Board 1 was adjourned after the first session with Mellor (Worcester) two pawns up in a rook and minor piece ending, but Turner had advanced pawns restricting Mellor's king. The players exchanged into a knight and pawn ending, but Mellor's winning attempts were repulsed and the players agreed a draw when faced with a drawn king and pawn ending.

  Result 4 - 2 Played 10 January
Match report by Stewart Fishburne. John Knee was first to finish. He played a sharp line which young Jorge Zavaleta had probably not seen before. John soon had a huge advantage and duly won. Board 2 was next to finish. Mark Bethel offered the Morra Gambit but Geoffrey declined and played an equalising line ending in a draw, resulted. On board 1, Brian fell into a piece of preparation and the resultant late ending was more familiar to Black. A sneaky tactic lead to White not being able to castle. Black was able to open the centre and whilst it may have been possible to get to an ending with only a small material deficit, in practice a rook fell off. With the match decided Mike and Tony agreed draws in still complex positions with chances for both sides.

Match result from Andrew Farthing and John Wrench, report from Ray Collett. A tight match that Worcester must consider a close shave. Worcester's man was a pawn down on Board 1 and players adjourned. Overnight cogitation allowed players to agree a draw. Nick Harris' game was an early finish and the only decisive one. Maurice Bissell and Ray Collett played a French Exchange Variation and repeated moves in a position where where both players thought they stood worse. Mark Riley won a pawn against Andrew Farthing, but Andrew steered the game to a rook and pawn ending where winning chances were 'thin' and a draw was agreed.

  Result 3 - 3 Played 8 March
Match reported by Ray Collett and Andrew Moore. Without their normal board 1, City were worried about this match. In what turned out to be a hotly fought contest, this was a cracking game. Hagley went ahead early when young Jason Pereira fionished off his opponent after winning a piece. The other games looked balanced at this stage. Ray Collett and Mike Friar agreed a draw after early exchanges had resulted in an open board with little material. About 30 minutes later, James P Friar agreed a draw with Andrew Farthing after a good combination to maintain a level position. On board 3, Jim Keene had a promising position, but only five minutes for 15 moves. Calm under fire, Keene negotiated a complex position where players were attacking kings on opposite sides. The City player got his threats in first and the Hagley player faced mate or loss of a rook at the end. Board 1 was agreed a draw after Peter Kitson played a combination to relinquish the pawn advantage he gained from a Blackmar Diemer Gambit. Craig Evans agreed a draw with Nick Harris after a time scramble so drawing the match. The result puts Worcester at the top of the table but Halesowen have 2 games in hand to make up the 1 point deficit. Worcester play Halesowen later in the month in a showdown for the title.

Match report by Andrew Moore. In what was a closer match than the score suggests, Redditch came close to winningt. Board 1 was agreed a draw by repetition of moves inside 30 minutes and an hour later board 6 lost having transposed into a lost end game. The remainder of the games were very close and finished at about the same time. Board 3 saw David Spowart resign in a position where white could mate in 4 or 5 different ways. Board 4 was an interesting rook and pawn end game. Both sides pushed their pawn but Joseph D Friar promoted first and quickly converted. On board 2 Andrew Wiggins applied sustained pressure on Jim Friar's position. Jim sacrificed a pawn in the centre to avoid defeat and then exploited a weak kingside to seal the victory for Hagley. Board 5 resigned soon after when he couldn't stop three marching pass pawns.

Match reported by Ray Collett. The deciding board 1 game is very much in Kitson's favour being two pawns up in a knight and pawn ending. Harris and Clarke started as an Alekhine but transposed into a Four Knights with neither side being able to take the initiative. John Knee played the Fianchetto Variation against Collett's Kings Indian and reduced Collett's position to passivity after a successful pawn advance to e5. Although Collett tried to complicate the position, his struggles were in vain. Update on 26 March: Turner resigned his adjourned game to make the match a draw.

Match reported by John Wrench. Hard fought very close match, perhaps unexpected with Halesowen top of the league having won all their previous games and Kidderminster at the foot of the table having yet to score a point. Having said that, most of those loses have been very close. For once Kidderminster had their strongest team and showed what a difference this can make. This result still leaves Halesowen strong favourites for the championship and Kiddermnster facing relegation unless things change dramatically in the remaining few games.

  Result 3 - 3 Played 30 March
Match reported by Andrew Moore and John Wrench. In this match there was some good chess and both teams deserved a point in this local derby. A draw was agreed on board 6 fairly early in the evening. Further draws resulted a while later on boards 5 and 1. Things started to look promising for Kidderminster when Mark Riley got two rooks on the seventh rank and a neat mate soon followed when the king's escape route was blocked by a pawn forcing Andrew to resign. Board 5 ended in a draw, which left Kidderminster ahead with board 4 to finish. In typical 'Friar' style Joseph had sacrificed a Pawn for the initiative. Tim looked to be holding the position well, securing a strong pawn-centre. A few of us popped next door to the pub for a quick beer, thinking Tim would at least draw to secure the match for Kidderminster. We returned just in time to see Joseph conjure up a neat mating trap with his bishop on the long diagonal, queen on h6 and the final blow came when Joseph placed a rook on the third rank at which point Tim resigned. Tim had earlier offered a draw when a pawn up so Joseph deserves credit for battling on to earn Hagley a draw. This match result gives Kidderminster a fighting chance of avoiding last place if they beat Redditch

Match reported by Ray Collett. Worcester's campaign to retain the league championship was blown away in this match by a resurgent Halesowen team. Worcester were weakened by absencesand defaulted on board 6. After an hour's play Halesowen were ahead in three of the five games. Mike Hadley won a piece and then mopped up. Mark Bethel faced a wall of static central pawns, but broke through. Although losing in the end, Worcester's new player, William Greenow, aquitted himself well against a much higher graded opponent. Although Jon Asbury won a pawn in the opening, William defended stoutly and forced Jon to demonstrate his ending technique in a rook and pawn ending. On board 2, Jorge Zavelata faced king side pressure but cool defence saw off a sacrificial attack. At the end of the session, Stewart Fishburne and Andrew Farthing adjourned in a minor piece ending where both sides have five pawns and Stewart has two bishops against two knights where the blocked central pawns may nullify the normal advantage of the bishops. Andrew conceded this game, having to little time to prepare for the second session and play.

Only on the top two boards did Halesowen have an advantage. On board 1, FishburneI won a pawn in the opening, but Bricknell got a fair amount of play for it and It took a while for Fishburne to win.
