Congress organiser hands £900 to Age Concern Sandwell

19 Aug. Andrew Farthing, on behalf of Worcestershire Chess Association, presents £650, the surplus from the Worcestershire Chess Association's annual congress at Worcester University to Age Concern Sandwell, this year's charity. See picture.

Star Worcester player at the British

6 Aug. Steve Mellor finished with three points from his appearance in the British at Sheffield. Steve was outclassed in one of the strongest British Championships for many years sponsored by Darwin Strategic. The new champion is GM Micky Adams who defeated GM Nigel Short in the tie-break quick play games.

City miss out in semi-final of W&D team knock-out

2 Aug. In the delayed quarter final match of the Worcester and District knock out team competition, with Droitwich & St John's the Bishops team lost out 1½ - 2½. The match was played at the Lunar Bar of the Swan with Two Nicks. Visit the Worcester & District site for more details.

City players gain grade points

1 Aug. In the latest English Chess Federation grading list Ed Osbourn and Phil Smith gain 10 points. Other gainers were Pat Greenow, Roger Yates and Steve Mellor. See details on the City list.

Club's newest member wins Worcestershire Open Congress

26 Jul. Pavel Besedin, visiting from Latvia, stormed the open section of third Worcestershire Open Congress winning the Worcester Open Championship. British Championship hopeful Steve Mellor finished on 3 points, having felt unwell during one of the rounds. Five other City players participated, two more in the Open section and three in the Minor. Osbourn - Mellor set for knock out final

28 Apr. In the second Knock out semi final, Ed Osbourn and Jim Keene slugged it out to a draw and so had to replay in a 5-minute blitz game to decide the place in the final to play Steve Mellor. In the fast game, favourite Ed made short work of his opponent.

Worcester Bishops shine in final league game

27 Apr. In the away match against a full-strength Kidderminster Knights team, Worcester won 3½ - ½. See here for details.

Worcester secure County League Championship

28 Mar. Hagley stumbled against Malvern in their bid to become champions. Worcester City had to win their last match, and did so in style beating Kidderminster 5-1. Read about it in Worcester News.

Mellor wins 2011 Lightning Tournament

4 Mar. Last year's winner failed to get into the semi finals and Steve regained the trophy he lost last year. Losing finalist was Ed Osbourn. Read more...

Worcester Bishops third in District Division 1

24 Feb. After a volcanic start to the season, the Bishops have lost to Redditch, Droitwich and Malvern.

City teams well placed in league tournaments

27 Feb - With over half of the fixtures played, City teams are placed 2nd in Division 1 of the the County League, the Bishops team is third in Worcester & District Division 1 and the Pawns second in Worcester & District Division 2.

Worcester Pawns second in District Division 2

17 Feb, Pawns draw with leaders Headless Cross to keep in contention. The Pawns stumbled against Droitwich in the New Year and are now a point adrift from leaders Headless Cross.

City players save county from near annihilation

29 Jan - In Worcestershire's heavy defeat at the hands of Lincolnshire, three of the county wins were from City players: Ed Osbourn, Ray Collett and Peter Kitson.

British qualifier in City Club

11 Jan 2012. With a first place in the Yorkshire Open, Steve Mellor qualifies to play in the British Championship this year.
