Worcester City Team 2009-2010

Introducing the Team

The City team played in Division 1 of the Worcester County League and participated in the Wheatley Memorial Handicap Team Knock Out Competition. Team captain was Ray Collett.

Captain's Report on 2009-10 Season

The highlight of the team's season was winning the Wheatley Team Knock Out Handicap Cup final in an exciting match against Hagley. In County League Division 1 we were without Nick Harris this season and performance was marginally worse than last year. The team came bottom of the Division drawing 2 of the 6 matches. The team played 7 members and drew upon 10 players during the season. Peter Kitson made an out-standing contribution by gaining 6½ points from 8 games (81%). Jim Keene was also in fine form with 5 points from 7 games (72%). County League In Division 1 of this league, Worcester competes against three other teams: Kidderminster I, Halesowen I, and Malvern. We play each team home and away during the season. Matches are over 6 boards. Time control is 42 moves in 1½ hours followed by an additional playing session or adjudication. Detailed league results are available for the last three seasons (opens in new window) starting with the 2008-9 page.

Wheatley Memorial Cup

Worcester City has already won this competition on three occasions, but were knocked out early last year. Games are not graded and are completed in 1½ hours with quickplay finish rules. In the first round this season Worcester had a bye and were due to meet Hagley A in the second round, but Hagley were unable to field a side and conceded the match. The Semi-finals were played against Hagley B at Greenlands and Worcester won convincingly 4½ - 2 (includes handicap). Worcester triumphed in an exciting finals match also played at Greenlands. Worcester won by the narrowest of margins: on board-count after both teams were found to have very nearly the same average grades.
