2015-6 League News

27 May. Jim Friar. After a short battle with illness, Jim passed away at home. He won the Bennett Cup in 2015 and was captain of Kidderminster Knights. Andrew Farthing, league secretary writes: "This is terribly sad news. Jim struck me as a very genuine, positive person, always ready with a friendly smile and a handshake whenever I met him. His loss will be keenly felt in the county's chess community. I can only imagine how devastating Jim's passing must be for Teresa and the boys, and my heart goes out to them". When funeral arrangements are known they will be placed on the Worcestershire County website.
29 Apr. Lee Davis wins the 2016 Bennett Cup competition
26 Apr. Draw for the semi-finals of the Ball Cup published.
14 Apr. Malvern League champions again. The League championship was decided on the last move of the last game to finish in the last Division 1 match.
18 Mar. Bennett Cup semi-final draw. Brian Turner (Malvern), Joseph Friar (Kidderminster), Peter Thompson (Mercia) and Lee Davis (Malvern) are this year's semi-finalists.
18 Oct. Draw for Bennett Cup and Ball Cup tournaments puiblished.
7 Oct. First league match result in for Division 2.
7 Sep. Bennett and Ball Cup competitions. Andrew Farthing continues as controller for the district individual trophies. Entry is completely free for members of affiliated clubs.
4 Sep. AGM and WDCL fixtures meeting. Mercia Chess Club were admitted to the league and play in Division 2. Five teams enter Division 1 playing home and away. Seven teams enter Division 2 playing a single fixture. In 2015-6 the individual competitions for the Bennett and Ball Cups were organised as 2014-5 with a closing date for entries on 9 October 2015. Affiliation fees for clubs and entry fees for teams were re-instated after a one year 'fee holiday', but as in previous years, entry to the individual competitions remains free for members of affiliated clubs. The meeting was held on Friday 4 September at Claines Church Institute, Worcester.
