Format
The format was a double-round all-play-all, i.e. each player will play a pair of games against the other three, one with white and the other with black. There was one twist: If the all-play-all is won by a margin of a clear point, the winner will be awarded the 2017/18 Ball Cup; if, however, there is a tie for first place OR a gap of only half a point between first and second, there will be a play-off final between the top two in line with the mixed all-play-all/knockout formats of previous years.
The competition rules were as usual: time control 35 moves in 75 minutes, followed by an additional 15 minutes to complete the game.
