2012-13 Season News

28 Jun. David Roberts (Worcester) won Bennett Cup. After two drawn standard play games, the finalists had to play an Armageddon tie-breaker. In a game of fluctuating fortunes, David ran out winner.
20 Jun. Joseph Friar wins Ball Cup. Joseph (Hagley) defeated Ray Collett in the final in a topsy turvy-game. Joseph is the youngest winner of the Ball cup for at least 30 years and possibly the youngest ever player to win this trophy.
30 Apr. In the final match in Div 2, Redditch sign off with a win finishing with 19 out of possible 20 match points. Kidderminster Rooks were the only team to score a draw against them.
29 Apr. With their last fixture a draw, Droitwich lift themselves off the bottom of Division 2.
22 Apr. In the last match of the season, Redditch lift themselves to mid-table with a decisive win over local rivals Headless Cross in Division 1.
19 Apr. Droitwich maintain improvement in Division 2 with win against Hagley.
17 Apr. Worcester Bishops are League Champions. After consultating the rules and checking calculations the Worcester Bishops Captain claims title on tie-break.
16 Apr. Redditch at home, bottom of the table, beat leaders Worcester Bishops in Div 1
11 Apr. Kidderminster Pawns, away, held Worcester Bishops to a draw in Div 1. The Worcester team join Malvern on 15 match points and 25 game points. The Bishops have another match, against Redditch, to win the championship where they need to ensure they are not whitewashed.
10 Apr. Malvern and Kidderminster Knights have completed their fixtures and Malvern must await Worcester Bishops results in Div 1.
9 Apr. In Div 2, Redditch maintain winning streak beating Hagley.
8 Apr. In Div 2, Droitwich break losing run to score first points.
29 Jun.
2 Apr. Redditch are Division 2 champions.Redditch romp away with the Division 2 title with two matches to spare!
22 Mar. Malvern draw against Kidderminster Knights to better Worcester Bishops' score, but the Worcester team has two matches in hand in Div 1.
21 Mar. Worcester catch Malvern with a win over Headless Cross and still have match in hand in Div 1.
15 & 19 Mar. In Division 2, Redditch win yet another two match retaining their 100% score this season.
11 Mar. In Div 1, Malvern leap over Worcester Bishops to head the table, but Worcester Have two matches in hand.
15 Feb. In what may have been the decisive match of the Division 1 this season, Worcester beat Malvern.
Sep. Kidderminster Pawns took promotion after a one-year absence.
24 Dec. Worcester Bishops lead Division 1, but Malvern have a match in hand. Redditch are favourites for Division 2 Championship.
17 Oct. Draw for Ball and Bennett Cups published.

5 Sep. Redditch Club moved to St John's Church Hall, Greenlands. Click "Clubs & Teams" menu button on the left for directions.
1 Sep. The new English Chess Federation Membership Scheme comes into effect making membership much cheaper than paying Game Fee for most players. The Worcester and District Chess League agreed at its annual meeting to encourage all league players to join.
30 Aug. Ray Collett reports from the AGM. At the AGM the secretary reported that Malvern had comfortably retained their League champions title with Worcester Bishops runners up in Division 1. Division 2 was won by Kidderminster Pawns who return to Division 1 after a year's absence. the 2011-12 Knock-out team tournament was running very late. Ashley Davis wins the Bennett Cup in the final against Jim Friar. Andrew Farthing wins the Ball Cup for the third time. Kidderminster Pawns accepted promotion to Division 1 for the 2012-13 season.There was discussion whether the League, which already shares officers with Worcestershire Chess Association, should not become a component part of the county. It was agreed that those attending should discuss these issues within their teams and clubs and the issue would be considered at the April executive meeting of the county assocaition and if there is sufficient support for the idea the two oragnisations would be asked to vote on specific proposals at their AGMs.
